The Show

Each episode is a deep-dive essay into a different fascinating cinematic topic. It might be a journey through the strange arc of a director’s filmography, a look at an under-discussed cinematic trend or technique, or an exhaustive analysis of a sub-genre you may have never thought that much before. Basically, each video explores whatever Patrick is particularly obsessed with that week.

The show always approaches movies with enthusiasm, curiosity, and a very dumb sense of humor. There are enough YouTube videos out there about why movies suck. We would much rather talk about why they’re weird and interesting and fun.

What separates Patrick (H) Willems from other video essay channels is that we try to take full advantage of the video medium and make each episode its own mini-movie - with a cinematic presentation, as well as a story and characters, that fit with the given topic. Essentially, we use actual filmmaking to talk about filmmaking. We just think it’s more fun this way.

The Past Season

In January 2020, the show embraced the model of a TV season, and began an ongoing serialized storyline that ran through every video. In May 2021, the last video ended on a cliffhanger, which was concluded in the feature film, NIGHT OF THE COCONUT.
